After many years, the group has dropped the word "Local" and become the History group, allowing a wider range of history to be drawn on from the north east region, and possibly further afield.

At the same time, in common with many other u3a History groups, we've agreed to conduct some of our own research from time to time. If members are too busy to do this, that isn't a problem at all. But for others it allows them time to explore areas in which they have an interest and share their findings with the rest of us.

So if you've sometimes wondered about a historic event and wished you knew more, please get involved and do some digging. Help will be given if you wish. You don't have to produce a full blown Powerpoint presentation. We'll learn together, as we go along, explore and enjoy ourselves.

9 September. Our member Mary Grimley will be starting the new season with our first venture into researching and presenting some of our own history. Mary will be telling us about what a remarkable woman her Grandmother was, in her time.

14 October. Tony Wood, the Battle of the Standard. Tony will tell us about the Battle of the Standard at Northallerton, which was a hugely important battle for our regional history.
